President Chris Baxendale

With Captains Tony Dearden and Carol Outhwaite are keen to lead the club forward both on and off the course.

There is an excellent blend of enthusiasm and experience on the committee this year.

The key roles are:

  • Greens: Dean Stokes
  • House: Kevin Hill
  • Finance: Michael Smith
  • Competitions: Mike Allen
  • Business Development: Chris Hirst
  • Social: David Johnson
  • Manager: Simon Lax

The committee invites you to ask questions, offer suggestions and provide input to the direction of your club.

A note from the Treasurer

Over the past 10 months we have continued to attract new male and female members to the club. The clubhouse continues to be actively used by both members and guests alike, resulting in a 10% increase in both catering and bar receipts.

We have just invested over £100,000 in new greens equipment, which was needed to replace an aging fairway mower and replace the specialized greens mowers. This is all part of planned improvements to the look and feel of the course.

All the above, coupled with strong controls over expenditure, means the club continues to trade on a sound financial platform.

Captain’s Report

Since the AGM I have represented the club at the LDG Union Annual Meetings and the club has successfully hosted the LDUGC Team Alliance and Yorkshire Girls Championship.

Thanks to some sponsorship and players willing to make a contribution, all those representing the club will be playing in club kit in matches this season. Some pre-season and inter-club knockout matches have already been played with all leagues (Scratch, Nett, Bradford 8-15, North Leeds 8-15 and Juniors) starting in early May.

All club competitions are now in full swing. Remember – we want to play as many finals as possible on Finals Day on Sunday 22nd September. The Club has committed to provide referees/scorers for all matches played on Finals Day and lunch for all Finalists as part of marking the day as a special event.

Please support your club in any way you can, particularly in signing up for the Captain’s matches and mixed comps. These are a great way to meet new people and to support the club in a less competitive environment – although winning is preferred!

Lady Captain’s News

Welcome to all our new ladies, it is great to see you joining in with our weekly competitions and organising games during the rest of the week. Please contact Lady Captain, or any of the ladies on committee for help with any golfing issues.

Our Team Match season is now well underway, thanks to all our enthusiastic players for your support - good luck to all the teams.

Information on Team Competitions is posted on the Ladies Main Noticeboard in the locker room. Many congratulations to Holly Rowntree who won Division 1 in the Yorkshire Junior Girls Regional Competition on 7th April with a fantastic score of 42 points.

Business Development

We are continuing to develop the 5 year plan to find ways to bring our major works forward to enable Council to support what we do and when.

New projects currently in planning include the Ladies Lockers, re-design of the first tee and pro shop, a new 19th and better use of the office space and junior room. If you have any other ideas or suggestions these will be gratefully received in the usual way. The last survey helped us align spend to the wishes of the members and we will be revisiting this in the autumn.

Airport Link Road

Leeds City Council recently hosted a number of presentation evenings in and around the various wards near the airport. There were a number of drawings showing the three possible routes. Route A – the favoured route, will impact the golf club in that it goes through the car park, a slightly better option than the original route that went across the first and eighteenth fairways and the practice field.

As yet nothing has been decided, and all the options including costings will be included in a report with recommendations to Leeds City Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, who will make the final decision later in the year.

Practice Ground

We were hopeful that work on the practice ground would have commenced by now, however an over zealous landscape architect at the Leeds City Council (LCC) has resulted in major changes to the original scheme. Revised drawings have been submitted to the LCCl and it is hoped that approval will be granted by the end of May.

Once obtained we will draft out a programme of works, meaning the practice ground will not be available to members for a period of at least 12 months. As a temporary measure the club is in discussions with the Green Emmott Trust to lease fields adjacent to the car park.

Competitions

We are pleased to announce two new competitions for this playing season, both of which will be "Board Competitions”. The Seniors Knockout for the over 55s and the Nett Trophy. The Nett Trophy will be played over two rounds with the top 60 nett scores, regardless of handicap. First round from the Saturday medal played on 10th August, the second round to be played on Sunday 18th August. Players will go out in reverse order, so the leaders from the first round will go out last. So please keep these dates free and support this new competition where you have a chance of getting your name in gold letters. It is hoped that we can combine the day with a family BBQ, weather permitting.

Handicap News

The World Handicap System (WHS) will be introduced in the UK late 2020 replacing the current CONGU System. Each player will need a new CDH, this may be given a different name, for an effective transition, and running of the new WHS. It is hoped that a player’s transition handicap will be viewed alongside the CONGU handicap earlier in 2020. The R & A will be starting to advertise the WHS to the public in the next few weeks. There is also information at www.whs.com

Mike Allan and Christine Greenhalgh have attended seminars on behalf of HGC and have information on the WHS.

House News

New lounge furniture has been purchased to compliment the new carpet. Improvements were also made to the lounge bar giving the area a more contemporary feel. We are looking at the dining room and the snooker room. This is with a view to making both areas more user-friendly for all. Redecoration of the 19th will be undertaken at some stage and various ideas are currently under consideration.

New bar menus have been printed and now in use together with new condiment and cutlery holders. A new numbered food ordering system making things easier for staff and members alike. A defibrillator is to be purchased and sited on the course. A demonstration evening is to be arranged with regards to its use and basic first aid. This is for all members and details will be circulated when a date has been fixed. The patio furniture together with the patio area is undergoing refurbishment to make ready for the summer.
